BETTY WAS CLOSER to tears than she’d been this whole time. It felt wrong to leave Garret behind, but Savannah wouldn’t survive if they didn’t start moving. As it was, she could barely walk and Betty was carrying the weight of both of them through the snowy dark.

Garret had told her to move north. Carefully. He’d warned her there might be more men after them out here. But her instructions were to find a North Star operative.

“This is ludicrous,” Savannah said. Her words were starting to slur and each step was more sluggish than the last. Betty urged her on nonetheless. Giving up wasn’t an option. Garret was putting himself in harm’s way to get Savannah to the hospital, so Betty was damn well going to get her to the hospital.

“Maybe it is,” Betty said, clenching her teeth to keep them from chattering. “But what’s the alternative?” she asked. She wanted to keep Savannah arguing, talking. Even though noise was a risk, the more Savannah moved and spoke, the better chance she’d stay conscious.

Savannah didn’t respond, though. She was shivering. Betty couldn’t give her the coat she was wearing because she’d ripped up her shirt underneath. She kept Savannah wrapped close to her as they took excruciatingly slow steps forward.

North. Move north.

Why was it taking so long? She knew they hadn’t gotten far but surely a North Star operative could meet them now.

God, the air was so cold, and the snow was getting into her boots. She wasn’t dressed for this. Savannah wasn’t going to survive this.

No.

She would not let the negative thoughts win. Not when Garret was risking himself so they could get to safety. She began to hum quietly under her breath. It was a painful reminder of childhood, of her father. He’d always hum “Battle Hymn of the Republic” when things were bleak.

Toward the end, things had always been bleak. He hadn’t made it out of all the complicated bad choices he’d made. All to save her.

To save her.

Now here she was. Saving others. He’d sacrificed for her and she’d let him.

Garret was doing the same thing. Risking himself for others—while his babies might never know him. All because he’d had to do the right thing.

Maybe it was different than her father—after all, the bad Dad had saved her from was of his own making—but it felt too much the same. Kids left without a dad all because he’d been intent on saving someone else.

The whole thing made her sick to her stomach.

“He’s saving you, not me, you know,” Savannah said, her voice weak and her weight getting heavier and heavier as Betty struggled to support her and take sure steps in the deep snow.

“What?” Betty had been so lost in her past she couldn’t fully understand what Savannah was trying to say.

“This is for you. Not me.”

“He could have left you behind.”

“Not Garret.” She shook her head. “I never did understand this do-gooder thing. I guess you’ve got it, too. What the hell are you doing trying to save me?”

“You tried to save me.
